Description:
Very common, widespread worms with long, cylindrical and slender bodies. Segments often bi-or triannulate, sometimes with strongly rugose epidermis.
Prostomium conical, without antennae or palps.
Peristomium limited to lips.
First segment longer than following segments, achaetous. Parapodia biramous, without aciculae. Thoracic parapodia with capillary chaetae. Abdominal neuropodia and notopodia both tori with single rows of multidentate hooded hooks. Tentacular, dorsal and ventral cirri absent. True gills absent.
Pygidium with or without a varying number of cirri.
Pharynx eversible, unarmed (Capitellidae).
