Description:
These are as a rule tiny worms, which live between seaweeds and sponges and in muddy coarse sand. Body is short and cylindrical with few segments or longer and thread-like. Prostomium short and frontally truncate, without antennae or palps. Some species with nuchal organs. Some of the first segments may be fused and without chaetae.
Peristomium limited to lips. Gills absent in full-grown animals.
First segment similar to other chaetigers, without tentacular cirri.
All parapodial features absent. Capillary chaetae present or absent. Distally dentate, unprotected hooks always present.
Pygidium without cirri (Ctenodrilidae).
