Magelona filiformis

Description:
Prostomium somewhat longer than broad, with two small ‘horns’ anteriorly. Thoracic notopodia with a finger-like dorsal cirrus and a postchaetal lamella, which is also finger-like but twice as long as the dorsal cirrus. Neuropodia with a finger-like ventral cirrus and a short, truncated postchaetal lamella. All thoracic chaetae are winged capillary chaetae. Abdominal parapodia with small papilliform dorsal and ventral cirri, two basally incised interramal lamellae and tridentate hooded hooks (M. filiformis-detail 1); (M. filiformis-detail 2).

Size:
Up to 100 mm for over 142 segments.

Colour:
Living animal transparent.

Habitat:
On sand or mud; lower eulittoral to upper sublittoral.

Distribution:
Northeast Atlantic to English Channel and Mediterranean. Also in the German Bight.
