This species has been reported from the North Sea many times (usually as Harmothoe ) but it has been split into several species and all records from the North Sea have been referred to the new species. The identity of the true M. lunulata is uncertain, but it is a Mediterranean species and probably does not occur in the North Sea (S. Chambers pers. com.).
