Description:
Body long and thin.
Prostomium semicircular with four reddish eyes in a trapezoid arrangement. Posterior pair the largest. Palps only visible ventrally, fused for their whole length. Anterior appendages club-shaped and ciliated. Median antenna a little longer than lateral ones. Lateral antennae 2x as long as the prostomium. Nuchal epaulettes reach the first chaetiger.
Dorsal tentacular cirri on peristomium, shorter than antennae, not much longer than segment width, ventral tentacular cirri a little shorter than dorsal ones.
Only first segment with dorsal cirri, a little longer than dorsal tentacular cirri. All other parapodia without dorsal cirri. Ventral cirri absent.
Parapodia with 3 kinds of chaetae: 1) compound chaetae with short blades, toothed at the tip; 2) bayonet-chaetae and 3) simple chaetae with 1-2 teeth at the tip. The third type occurs on the anterior 4 chaetigers (P. halleziana-chaetae).
Pharynx clearly twisted. Trepan with 16-32 small teeth.
Size:
Body up to 25 mm long for 50-60 segments.
Colour:
Body light brown, yellow or orange-coloured posterior body half.
Habitat:
Between algae, from eulittoral down to 150 m deep.
Distribution:
English Channel, probably whole North Sea up to Skagerrak.
