Description:
Body long and slender with 110-120 segments.
Prostomium is oval with two eyes, a short, club-shaped antenna and two U-shaped nuchal slits.
Notopodial postchaetal lobes very small in the fist chaetiger, but becoming bigger, long and filamentous in posterior chaetigers.
Neuropodial postchaetal lobes very small and absent in the chaetigers without gills.
The three most anterior chaetigers bear two kinds of capillaries on both noto- and neuropodia: some long and thin, some shorter with a narrow distal wing. Thin capillary chaetae replace other types from the middle of the gill-region to the posterior end. 1-6 unidentate hooded hooks ventrally from segment 13-18 (A. cerrutii-detail).
Up to 23 pairs of finger-like gills, starting at chaetiger 4.
Pygidium with two long and one short cirrus.
Size:
Up to 20 mm for 120 segments.
Colour:
White, yellowish or greenish. Darker pigment on prostomium and first segments.
Habitat:
Sublittoral to 400 m. All kinds of bottoms, mostly on shelly gravel (Amphioxus-gravel).
Distribution:
North Atlantic to Mediterranean, North Sea to western Baltic Sea, South Africa, Red Sea, New Caledonia.
