Description:
Body cylindrical, slender, with up to 95 chaetigers.
Prostomium bluntly conical, with two relatively large eyes on the posterior half of the prostomium. The eyes are surrounded by small pigment patches. Prostomium with two dorso-lateral lobes. Anterior two achaetous segments dorsally fused. The long, thick palps are inserted on the last achaetous segment. Filamentous gills start at first chaetiger. Gills absent on posterior 14-30 segments.
Chaetae capillary, smooth in anterior segments, smooth and finely serrated in posterior notopodia. Also slightly S-shaped hooks present, starting at neuropodium 10 and notopodium 16 (C. caput-esocis-detail).
Size:
Up to 17 mm for 95 segments.
Colour:
Yellowish-brown, partly with pigmentation near the eyes.
Distribution:
Eastern North Atlantic up to the Mediterranean, Adriatic Sea and Black Sea. English Channel and North Sea.
