Ceratocephale loveni

Malmgren, 1867

Description:
Body narrow, dorsal surface flat, with ridges on some mid-body segments; integument smooth.
Prostomium with a pair of antennae arising from prominent cirrophores and a pair of biarticulate palps with elongated styles; eyes absent.
All tentacular cirri relatively short, dorsal tentacular cirrus of each longer than ventral pair, second dorsal tentacular cirrus reaching chaetiger 5.
Pharynx with a pair of denticulate jaws; oral ring with 3 soft papillae dorsally and 7 papillae ventrally; maxillary ring smooth, papillae absent.
Parapodia of the first 2 chaetigers uniramous with 2 lobes.
Remaining parapodia biramous with 3 lobes; a notopodial acicular lobe, a neuropodial acicular lobe and a ventral neuropodial lobe; notopodial acicular lobe short and rounded, with a prominent tapering prechaetal lobe, neuropodial acicular lobe broad with a short prechaetal lobe and ventral neuropodial lobe thin and tapering. Dorsal cirri arise from cirrophores which become elongated, inflated and vascularised by chaetiger 6-8, retaining this appearance until approximately chaetiger 20, then reduce in size posteriorly; dorsal cirri extend slightly beyond chaetae in the anterior region gradually increasing in length until in the posterior region they are 3-4 times longer than parapodia. Dorsal cirri from approximately chaetigers 10-20 directed over the dorsum, the remainder directed posteriorly. Ventral cirri much shorter than parapodial lobes, bifid or double from chaetiger 3. Dorsal bands visible from chaetiger 9, maximally developed by chaetiger 13-15, and reduced in prominence again by chaetiger 17; mid-dorsal papilla visible associated with dorsal bands in some specimens. Number of segments with dorsal bands and with vascularised dorsal cirrophores may be related to the size of the animal. Chaetae all homogomph spinigers, present as very dense bundles on chaetigers 3-14 or 15, then reducing in number. Notopodial chaetae arise behind a tapering prechaetal lobe, both above and below the acicula; neuropodial chaetae arise behind a short prechaetal lobe, both above and below the acicula (C. loveni-detail).

Over 25 mm for 47 chaetigers.
