Description:
Body swollen and fairly smooth anteriorly. Posterior region is narrow, like a string of beads, with a marked constriction between the segments.
The body is covered with filamentous and club-shaped papillae and encrusted with sand grains
Prostomium and peristomium are retractile, with four flattened gills, four slender cirriform gills, four eyes and two long palps.
The first chaetiger bears long, anteriorly directed chaetae. They are annulated and iridescent. The notopodial chaetae on the following chaetigers are annulated, but shorter. Neuropodial chaetae are relatively short, annulated and bent at the tip. All chaetae are golden yellow
(D. glaucus-detail).
Size:
Up to 25 mm for 50 segments.
Colour:
Pearly grey or silvery white.
Habitat:
Sublittoral, on muddy or sandy bottoms.
Distribution:
Arctic, eastern North Atlantic to Mediterranean, North Sea, Skagerrak to Öresund, South Africa.
