Description:
Body long, strong and cylindrical.
Prostomium oval, longer than wide, with an encircling rim, higher anteriorly, laterally and posteriorly weakly incised. Nuchal slits parallel, extending posteriorly to the beginning of the lateral incisions. Without ocelli.
18 or 19 chaetigers. The mid-body segments are very long, anterior and posterior segments are shorter.
The nine first segments with glandular patches anteriorly and around parapodia, on other segments glandular areas confined to parapodia.
The notopodial capillary chaetae are winged with or without feathery tips. Anterior 3 segments with ventral spines, following segments bear normal hooks with a bundle of hair under the strong terminal tooth. The 5 posterior segments without chaetae.
Pygidium funnel-shaped, with some long cirri and many short cirri and 1 long ventral cirrus in between (E. robusta-detail).
Size:
Up to 150 mm for 19 chaetigers.
Tube:
Thin, covered with mud, fine sand and foraminiferans. Diameter outside 4 mm, inside 3 mm.
Colour:
Yellowish-brown with red patches or fields on 3-7 chaetigers.
Habitat:
Lives in a clay-tube encrusted with foraminifers and shell fragments, mostly in mud.
Distribution:
Eastern North Atlantic up to English Channel, northern North Sea and Skagerrak.
