Description:
Prostomium composed of ca. eight rings, with palps and antennae forming a cross at the tip.
Mid-body segments biannulate. Parapodia with pre- and postchaetal lamellae, long and pointed or of similar size. Postchaetal lamellae clearly separated. Dorsal cirri ovoid, ventral cirri triangular.
Gills occur on the dorsal side of the parapodium starting at about chaetiger 20.
Pharynx with papillae of three kinds: fingernail, finger-shaped and conical.
Aileron with an inner branch united to the outer branch by an interramal plate; tip of the inner branch may be drawn out (G. alba-detail).
Size:
Up to 75 mm long for 150 segments.
Colour:
Living animal white.
Habitat:
In depths of 10-300 m in muddy sands.
Distribution:
Northern Atlantic and Mediterranean.
