Nephtys assimilis

Description:
Prostomium pentagonal, with two antennae and two similar palps.
First segment with only ventral filamentous tentacular cirri.
Parapodia: notopodial postchaetal lamellae, unequally bilobed, a little longer than the acicular lobes. Neuropodial postchaetal lamellae much longer than the acicular lobes.
Neuropodial postchaetal lamellae with vascular structures starting at the 15th parapodium. Acicular lobes rounded, prechaetal lamellae bilobed.
Gills start from segment 4 to the posterior end (N. assimilis-parapodium).
Pharynx with 22 longitudinal rows of 2 to 5 papillae.

Size:
Up to 115 mm long for 110 segments.

Colour:
In alcohol cream-coloured, anterior body slightly iridescent, medioventral groove darkened. Pharynx distally with orange as well as the subterminal papillae. Chaetae olive-coloured in posterior body darker.

Habitat:
Sandy or muddy sediments or a mixture of both. From eulittoral down to 100 m deep. Often together with Nephtys hombergii .

Distribution:
Widely distributed in the area.
