Description:
Body long and slender.
Prostomium pentagonal with two antennae and two similar palps.
First segment with reduced leaf- or hump-shaped dorsal tentacular cirri; ventral ones a little longer than the palps.
Parapodia: postchaetal lamellae of notopodia simple, rounded, a little longer than the acicular lobe; those of the neuropodia oval, broadly rounded and much longer than the acicular lobe, without vascular structures. Acicular lobes simple, rounded. Parapodia dorsally and ventrally with a small medial bulb or papilla near the tip of the acicula. Prechaetal lamellae in notopodium longer than acicular lobe, bilobed (N. hombergii-parapodium).
Gills start at segment 4, 5 or 6 to the posterior end.
Pharynx with 22 longitudinal rows of 3 to 6 papillae and one additional large mediodorsal papilla.
Size:
Up to 200 mm long for 135 segments.
Colour:
Body pink, shining like mother-of-pearl, gills red, prostomium often with one dark pigmented spot.
Habitat:
Mixed substrata, occurs from the middle eulittoral to 400 m deep. Also in muddy substrata and oyster banks.
Distribution:
Widely distributed in the area.
