Description:
Body long and slender.
Prostomium with two eyes and a small terminal papilla, without antenna. Prostomium and peristomium are fused and form a conical, long head with a narrow tip. Anterior part of body often clearly demarcated by a transverse invagination.
Notopodial postchaetal lobes on the first two chaetigers tiny, becoming longer and finger-like posteriorly. Very small neuropodial postchaetal lobes present.
Chaetae are curved capillaries with narrow wings. Up to three modified chaetae present from chaetiger 50. They are thick, distally bent with a subdistal bunch of short hairs on the concave side (P. fulgens-hook).
Up to 25 pairs of broadly leaf-like gills, starting at chaetiger 4.
Pygidium with two long and one shorter cirrus.
Size:
Up to 30 mm for 120 segments.
Colour:
Whitish with greenish pigmentation.
Habitat:
On sand, eulittoral to 100 m.
Distribution:
North Atlantic to Mediterranean, North Sea to Öresund.
