Description:
Body slender with long tapering posterior half. Prostomium round to pentagonal. Eyes medium-sized. Proboscis basally with about four more or less clearly defined rows of about 3-6 papillae on each side. Distal part with 6 longitudinal rows of tubercles. Terminal ring of 14-18 papillae, usually 17. Segment 1 and most of segment 2 not visible dorsally. Tentacular cirri of segment 1 reaching about segment 8. Dorsal and ventral tentacular cirri of segment 2 reaching about segment 13 and segment 8 respectively. Dorsal tentacular cirri of segment 3 reaching about segment 12. Chaetae present from segment 3. Dorsal cirri of median segments large, rectangular. Parapodial lobes slightly bilobed. Ventral cirri broad, slightly pointed, longer than parapodial lobes. Pygidial cirri about 4-5 times as long as broad (P. citrina-detail).
Size:
Up to 150 mm for 250 segments.
Colour:
Living animals yellowish with dark brown pigmentation laterally on prostomium, anterior to eyes, on dorsum with darker spots medially forming a longitudinal band, and medially on dorsal cirri. Eyes dark red. Pigmentation preserves fairly well.
Habitat:
Mainly occurring on mud bottoms, from 15 to 270 m.
Distribution:
Arctic and circumboreal. In northern Europe known from Öresund, Skagerrak, western Norway, Helgoland, Shetland and Wales.
