Description:
Body long and thin, skin smooth.
Prostomium small, embedded in the first segment without antennae. Palps long and smooth, fused to ventral sides of first parapodia.
Peristomium limited to lips.
First segment fused in front of prostomium with anteriorly directed neuropodia present and two pairs of tentacular cirri. Two pairs of eyes in second and third chaetigers.
Notopodia represented by bulbous dorsal cirri with terminal papillae and internal aciculae, without chaetae. Neuropodia well-developed, with a few chaetae of three kinds: simple, stout and with teeth on the oblique surface, on all parapodia, compound with unidentate blade on all parapodia and smooth spines only on posterior parapodia. Ventral cirri of the first segment long and thin, the rest shorter than the parapodial lobes, bulbous with terminal papilla (P. remota-detail).
Pygidium with two long thin cirri.
Pharynx eversible, with two pairs of jaws.
Size:
Up to 26 mm for over 90 segments.
Colour:
Whitish, females with orange eggs.
Habitat:
Interstitial in sand; eulittoral and upper sublittoral to 25 m.
Distribution:
North Pacific, North Atlantic to Mediterranean and Black Sea. North Sea to Bay of Kiel.
