Polycirrus arcticus

Description:
Body firm, circular in cross section, narrow anteriorly, usually thicker in posterior part of thorax, abdomen tapering. Tentacles numerous and moderately long, composed of thick grooved ones and thin cylindrical ones. Tentacular ridge concave. Upper lip low, usually with four folds in a plane perpendicular to the body axis, almost completely enclosing mouth (P. arcticus-detail). One unpaired and a number of paired ventral shields, not distinct. Notopodial chaetae smooth, small with sharp tips, starting at segment 2, notopodia very small. 15-22 thoracic chaetigers. Uncinigerous tori from the 13th or 14th chaetiger, very low, short.

Up to 60 mm for 55 segments.

Colour:
In alcohol almost white.

Habitat:
Mainly on muddy bottoms; 60-1440 m.

Distribution:
West Greenland, Canadian Arctic, Franz Josef's Land, Novaya Zemlya, Kara Sea, western North Atlantic, East Greenland, Svalbard, Jan Mayen, Iceland, the Faeroes, Barents Sea, Norwegian Sea, Norway north of Lofoten and possibly Norwegian south coast.
