Description:
Prostomium anteriorly deeply incised, with two or four eyes and a short median antenna, posteriorly with a caruncle reaching segment 2-6. Two long palps present.
First notopodium without chaetae.
Notopodial postchaetal lobes well-developed, finger-like. Neuropodial postchaetal lobes shorter, broadly rounded.
Fifth chaetiger dorsally with capillary chaetae anteriorly and modified chaetae in two U-shaped rows: the outer row with 15-30 thick and spoon-like, subterminally concave chaetae; the inner row with 15 thick and unidentate chaetae with subdistal swellings.
8th and following neuropodia with 20-40 strongly bent hooded hooks with a small distal tooth and a bigger subdistal tooth (P. antennata-detail).
Gills start at chaetiger 7.
Pygidium with a dorsally and ventrally incised funnel.

Size:
Up to 30 mm for 100 segments.

Colour:
Yellowish, without dark pigment.

Habitat:
On all kinds of substrata, from eulittoral to 80 m.

Distribution:
North Sea, Skagerrak, Isefjord, Öresund, Indopacific, East Atlantic, Mediterranean and Black Sea.
