Description:
Body flattened anteriorly.
Prostomium anteriorly more or less incised, with four to six eyes and a small median antenna, posteriorly with a caruncle reaching chaetiger 2. Two long palps present.
First notopodium without chaetae.
Fifth chaetiger with modified chaetae in two U-shaped rows. Modified chaetae of the inner row thick and subdistally hollowed-out. Modified chaetae of the outer row geniculate and winged. 8th and following neuropodia with 15 or more hooded hooks (P. pulchra-chaetae).
19-29 pairs of gills, starting at chaetiger 7 or 9.
Pygidium with a dorsally incised funnel.
Size:
Up to 30 mm for 80 segments.
Colour:
Anterior segments with black spots; palps with red-brown transverse rings.
Habitat:
On sand or mud, in the upper 20 to 50 meters of the sublittoral.
Distribution:
North Sea to Ă–resund, North Atlantic to Mediterranean.
