Description:
Body long and cylindrical.
Prostomium oval, anterior broadly rounded with an encircling rim, higher anteriorly; laterally and posteriorly weakly incised. Nuchal slits extending posteriorly to the beginning of the lateral incisions, slightly diverging anteriorly. With ocelli.
18 chaetigers. Anterior and posterior segments short, in the mid-body long. Broad glandular band on first 8 chaetigers. On other segments glandular areas around the neuropodia, between notopodia and along the ventral mid-line. Notopodial capillaries on thorax with or without feathery tips. Anterior 3 segments with reduced hooks on neuropodia, rest of the body with normal hooks. Posterior 3 segments without chaetae.
Pygidium funnel-shaped, with 12-27 somewhat unequally short cirri and 1 much longer ventral cirrus.
Size:
Up to 60 mm for 18 chaetigers.
Tube:
Covered with crust of fine sand.
Colour:
Chaetiger 3-7 irregularly spotted red.
Habitat:
From 25-230 m.
Distribution:
North Pacific, East Atlantic up to Mediterranean and Red Sea, Western North Sea, Skagerrak, Kattegat, the Belts.
