Praxillella quadrilobata

Description:
Body cylindrical.
Prostomium oval, anterior broadly rounded with high encircling rim, higher anteriorly, laterally and posteriorly weakly incised. Nuchal slits short, only extending to one third of the prostomium, anteriorly diverging. With ocelli on both sides of the prostomium.
19 chaetigers. First segments as long as the fused prostomium-peristomium; segments in mid-body longer; posterior segments short. Broad glandular bands present on the first 8 chaetigers. On other segments, glandular areas present dorsally and ventrally between the parapodia.
Notopodial capillaries with narrow or broad wings, tip feathery. Anterior 3 segments with S-shaped, spines on neuropodia. Other neuropodia with strongly bent hooks. Posterior 5 segments without chaetae (P. quadrilobata-detail).
Pygidium funnel-shaped and short, with 20-30 equally long filamentous and a somewhat longer ventral cirrus.

Size:
Up to 70 mm for 19 chaetigers.

Tube:
Covered with sand.

Habitat:
Live in clay-tubes encrusted with sand on muddy bottoms. Between 30-270 m.

Colour:
Chaetigers 3-8 irregularly spotted red.

Distribution:
Northeast Atlantic, western Norway near Skagerrak.
