Description:
Body long, flattened anteriorly and cylindrical posteriorly.
Prostomium triangular or rectangular, rounded anteriorly, posteriorly with a short caruncle. 0-4 eyes.
Peristomium with a fold, formed by the notopodial postchaetal lobes.
Notopodial postchaetal lobes of the first parapodia more or less developed, fused to upper margin of the first segment and forming a small fold around the prostomium. Notopodial postchaetal lobes triangular to leaf-like, in chaetiger 3-5 very big, posteriorly becoming shorter; in segment 7 and a few following segments connected by a kind of collar across the dorsum. Neuropodial postchaetal lobes are oval, rounded in the anterior part and more triangular in the posterior part.
Anterior parapodia with winged capillary chaetae only. From neuropodium 12-21 and from notopodium 30-70 with 4-7 hooks. Hooded hooks with a main tooth and 4-6 small teeth (P. steenstrupi-detail).
Four pairs of gills, starting at chaetiger 2; the first and fourth pair long and feathery; the second and third pair short and smooth.
Pygidium with one long and two short cirri.

Size:
Up to 45 mm for 170 segments.

Colour:
Yellow-brown.

Habitat:
On sand or mud, from 10-65 m, also in poly- and mesohaline water.

Distribution:
Arctic, North Pacific, North Atlantic to Mediterranean, Black sea, North Sea to Ă–resund, Indopacific, South Africa, Australia, South America.
