Description:
Prostomium composed of ca. eight rings, with palps and antennae forming a cross at the tip.
Mid-body segments biannulate. Parapodia with pointed prechaetal lamellae, equal in length. Postchaetal lamellae chordate. Dorsal cirri ovoid; ventral cirri long and pointed.
Paired retractile gills occur on the anterior face of the parapodium, starting at about chaetiger 20.
Pharynx with papillae of two kinds: rounded and conical ones.
Aileron with an interramal plate. The outer edge of the inner branch tapers smoothly to the base (G. unicornis-detail).
Size:
Up to 350 mm long for 400 segments.
Colour:
Living animal pink.
Habitat:
In depths of 10 to 200 m in sandy mud.
Distribution:
Southern North Sea, English Channel, Atlantic, Mediterranean.
