Description:
Body cylindrical.
Prostomium oval, encircling rim reduced to an anterior small bulb. Nuchal slits extending to less than half the length of the prostomium.
Head longer than the following segments. Segments of the mid-body at least 2x as long as broad, posterior segments shorter. Anterior segments with glandular bands anterior to the parapodia.
19 chaetigers. Notopodial chaetae capillaries, some with feathery tips. Anterior 4 segments with spines on the neuropodia, posterior segments with hooks. Last 4 segments without chaetae (P. muelleri-detail).
Pygidium funnel-shaped and relatively short, with equally short filamentous cirri and 2 clearly longer ventral cirri.
Size:
Up to 165 mm for 19 chaetigers.
Tube:
Cylindrical, covered with fine sand, foraminiferans and larger sand grains. Diameter outside 9-10 mm, inside 2 mm.
Colour:
Anteriorly with yellow-red spots.
Distribution:
North Atlantic up to English Channel, northern North Sea and Kattegat.
