Description:
Body small and slender.
Prostomium pointed at both ends, with four eyes in a bent line, with a small median antenna. Caruncle reaching segment 2.
Notopodial postchaetal lobes in segment 1 short, rounded, in the following segments completely fused to the gills, later with a free tip. Neuropodial postchaetal lobes of the 1st segment longer than notopodial ones and oval. On following segments, broadly rounded to rectangular, in posterior segments becoming smaller.
Gills start at segment 2, long and fused to the notopodial postchaetal lobes. At the posterior end, shorter and free.
First segment without chaetae on the notopodia, but with capillaries on the neuropodia. Following parapodia with capillary chaetae only, longer and thinner on notopodia than on neuropodia; from segment 15-16 onwards also 10-15 hooded hooks on the neuropodia. These in profile with two accessory teeth, the subdistal one splitted. No notopodial hooks.
Pygidium with two round lobes (S. tridentata-detail).
Size:
Up to 20 mm for 70 segments.
Colour:
In alcohol pale whitish or pale brown.
Habitat:
Muddy and mixed bottoms, between 5 and 150 m.
Distribution:
North Atlantic to Mediterranean, Black Sea, Skagerrak, Ă–resund.
