Description:
Body is thick but fragile.
Prostomium rounded quadrangular to semicircular with four eyes in a trapezoid arrangement and two ocelli. Palps broad lobe-like, often larger than the prostomium. Median antenna at least 2 times longer than lateral antennae. Lateral antennae longer than palps and without annulation.
Tentacular cirri and dorsal cirri without distinct annulation. Ventral cirri present; (E. blomstrandi-parapodium). 1-3 aciculae. Blades of compound chaetae very short, bidentate. Posterior parapodia with additional upper capillary chaeta and lower bidentate simple chaeta (E. blomstrandi-detail). Pharynx with two rows of soft papillae anteriorly and crowned by a dark, finely toothed chitinous ring (trepan) ; also a single large conical tooth (E. blomstrandi-proboscis ). Proventriculus elongated, with 50-55 rows of spots .
Size:
Body up to 32 mm long for 124 segments.
Colour:
Living animals yellow or orange, gills with brown tips.
In alcohol transparent, brownish or light green anterior body. Phosphorescent.
Habitat:
Lives between algae, bryozoans and hydroids, often in a mucus tube. From the sublittoral down to 1700 m deep.
Distribution:
Widely distributed in the area.
